001. OOC = / = IC.
This is an incredibly important rule to me. I AM NOT MY CHARACTER. Meaning, if my character does something or says something to yours, it is not meant as a personal offense. If my character acts a certain way, that does not mean that I feel the same way. If our characters get into a relationship, it does NOT mean that we, out of character, are in a relationship. A distinction between in-character and out-of-character interactions is incredibly important. If you cannot separate yourself from your character, or me from mine, I may not be the person that would be good for you to RP with.
This does not mean I'm not open to talk! If my character does something that genuinely upsets you OOC or you have concerns, feel free to talk to me about it! 002. 18+ PARTNERS ONLY.
No underage players/partners. Due to the nature of Kai's character, I'd really only like to interact with players that are 18+. Sorry! 003. NO WOL/MSQ-ADJACENT CHARACTERS.
I prefer to carve my own path through the world of FFXIV, and I'd prefer if my partners did the same. On occasion, I tend to do some lorebending and I really don't mind if my partner does the same, I actually find it fun to see people play with the limitations of the world and allow their creativity to show. I am not interested in a character on a power-scale like to the WoL, the scions, or anyone adjacent. I'd also rather not associate with characters that are relevant to the main storyline of FFXIV. Please don't interact with my character if this pertains to yours. ♡
004. NO METAGAMING/POWERPLAYING
As fun as it can be to have insanely powerful characters that always win a fight due to their roidrage, I'm not interested in interacting or much intense combat-RP pertaining to Kai. When it comes to power scaling in the FFXIV universe, there are a lot of powerful characters out there. Kai is not one of them, and I'm not looking to change that. If I disclose something to you out of character, or you read something in Kai's carrd that wouldn't be public knowledge, please don't bring it up in-character without consulting me first. If you do powerplay or metagame, I may end up blacklisting you and voiding all previous interactions with Kai. 005. CONSENT IS KEY
I am totally cool with darker plotlines! I love writing my characters both in and out of dark, realistic situations that change them for either the worse or the better. However, these plotlines can be really taxing on my mental health, and they're best used sparingly! So, please talk to me about darker plotlines you'd like to explore with my character. I'm open to discussing just about anything.
Hard limits for things I will absolutely NOT DO are under the following spoiler:

"PRIDE GOETH BEFORE DESTRUCTION, AND A HAUGHTY SPIRIT BEFORE A FALL."
The first memory Kai could recall is also the same that taunts him the most.It begins with a rhythmic, incessant alarm, piercing to his ears. He remembers a pressure around his throat, tight enough to threaten to choke him further on every warbling sob that wracked his small body. He remembers the fear of dying, something no child should ever have to face, the feeling of the cold sting freezing him from the inside out on every heaving breath. It’s a moment he’s brought back to most often in even the barest grip of winter, when cold, metallic fingers pressed bare against the skin of his throat. It’s a memory of Garlemald. The first memory he had was of an ex-soldier, a runway rat just like him, cradling him in his cold, prosthetic arms to ward against the snow. He had to hold both palms over his nose and mouth to muffle his cries as the collar that bound him fell uselessly to the snow-littered streets. It was the memory of being free, yet being unable to parse the meaning of the word. From then on, he learned the meaning of family. Taken too soon from an annexed region of Gyr Albania, he had no real memory of his parents. He had no memory of how the galaxies beyond their own star shone like little candles under the shadow of the moon, how the rolling, dusty hills bore sand that glistened in the sun, or how wonderful the morning warmth felt after a long, unforgivingly cold night. Kai wouldn’t come to know any of this until nearing his second decade of life.
It was nearly two decades ago that a Garlean defector by the caricature of “Sir” took in his first street rat. Having long since allied himself with the filth and fellow abandoners of a war, haunted by the echoes of his past, he knew he had no life or legacy to pass on. He found the boy, a subhuman, savage beast no more human than any other-- and he knew who would then pass on his memory. Either separated from his family or another orphan on the streets, he didn’t know and neither did the boy.His name was Kai. He’d never seen a miqo’te that looked like him. Rounded ears and a long tail that was far too large for his tiny head, but with a promising structure that he knew had been the main reason the Garleans had taken him in. Good blood for a good soldier. In breaking open the shock collar bound to his spine, Sir was doing more than freeing an orphan -- it was one more slight win against the empire. The boy called him ‘Sir,’ just like he asked, but in the way that he helped him up the stairs when his joints didn’t work anymore, or in the way that he believed his lies, looking up to him with the most unique pair of eyes that the man had ever seen, he knew Kai had always meant to say “dad.”
Kai was not the first rat to enter their nest, nor would he also have been the last. There were others, too. Slaves and victims to warring nations. Escaped soldiers. In their simplicity, they were family. Kai learned what that word meant in the nights they huddled in cots, watching the rattling windowpanes and praying to any God that would listen that the cerulean heaters lasted just one more night. He learned how to share his portions, how to hide his valuables from thieving, sticky fingers and learned how to steal in turn. Who were the best pockets to pick, why preserved foods were infinitely better than fresh fruit or candy, and when to come back so he wouldn’t be locked out when the sun set. That was one of the few rules of the rat’s nest: Come back before sunset. If you didn’t, if you pounded on the doors and wailed, you would only bring the guards. You would kill the nest. That was another rule, never share the location of the nest. You’re better off dead than compromising your family. The other rules, Kai learned very early on, were unspoken but loomed just as large. They all revolved around Sir. You didn’t cross Sir. You didn’t question Sir. You didn’t tell anyone about Sir. Sir always eats first and you don’t ever, ever steal from him.Kai was always called the Dodger. A sneaky cat, the man’s favorite and always eager to please his father figure. Throughout the years he spent under the man’s care, he kept learning new lessons. New rules that were different from the ones the day before. He learned never to test his luck with Sir, when the boys he was raised around him dared the Dodger to steal liquor from the aging man’s locked cabinet.Sir always slept at the same time everyday. He didn’t get up easily, prosthetic limbs replaced those of flesh, lost from old wounds or frostbite. He relied on his Dodger to help him day in and day out. Kai thought it would be easy.He hadn’t expected Sir to be waiting for him.A boy covered in welts from head to toe left that room that evening, and taught a lesson in droves about the importance of the pecking order. About the most important rule: Steal from who you want, but never from the man of the house. Kai still has nightmares about that night. The sound flesh made as it split under the repeated whallops of a wooden crook, the feeling of his tail being ground underheel and tugging at the wrong end of his spine. The greatest lesson of all was that those who claimed to be your family would do awful things when they perceived you as the ‘favorite son.’In the weeks following his punishment, Kai noticed little things done for him. His favorite fruits placed conveniently in spots he could find, extra toys appearing in his stash, his chores conveniently having been done in advance. It was as much of an apology as he was ever going to get, but one that he never received from the one person it mattered from.

"HONESTY IS OF GOD AND DINHOESTY OF THE DEVIL; THE DEVIL WAS A LIAR FROM THE BEGINNING"
As the years went on, something changed in Sir. He was always a kind father, a provider and he held all of their unending respect. But when Kai looked back, he understood what Sir really was: A broken, drunk old fool who craved belonging and purpose. Bringing together a band of misfits granted him that sense of superiority, being their senior and their savior. A group of children would look away when Sir struck one of their own for any perceived slight, they would give him his liquor and his fix, more and more by each passing day, because it was what he asked for. It was what loosened his tongue and made him easier to deal with.
It took years for everyone to fall into a rhythm. That rhythm is what kept the nest safe, it was what kept everyone in order and at peace. If everyone respected the rules, the days passed smoothly. When certain days were rougher than the last, so long as they kept to the bare minimum of understanding, that meant they could all get past the worst nights. When Sir’s memories acted up, when the pain in his joints and the phantom pains turned him to a cruel master, he knew his family could find forgiveness in the weeds. That was how it went. Life wasn’t easy, but at least it had been theirs to share. Until that little bastard showed up to ruin everything and take his Dodger away.
There comes a time in any child’s life where they begin to grow out of their downy feathers. When they feel the need to leave their nest, even when they haven’t grown their flight feathers yet. Some species even push their young from the nest to watch them fly. Some even push the runts out. One less mouth to feed.Sheltering from a passing guard just near a schoolyard, Kai met a boy with snowy white hair and olive eyes so dark he thought they were deeper than the night sky, more infinite than any dream or nightmare he’d ever had. The boy was bundled up with a heavy coat with fur on the inside and soft velvet on the outside. He smelled like cloves and clean linen. He took one look at Kai. The dirt under his nails, the dull sheen to his filthy hair, the grime between his teeth and the stench of the nest clinging to his meager clothes. The boy didn’t flinch, he just smiled and offered Kai a fruit that had a soft, fuzzy skin and a sweet bite that exploded on his tongue. He’d never tasted anything so incredible in his life.Kai had never fallen in love so fast as he did that day, and he never would again. The days passed like that. Every day, instead of hunting for liquor for Sir and treats for the other boys, Kai spent his days with the boy with snow-white hair. The boy showed up with new fruit and sweets to have Kai try and Kai shared with him stories, trinkets, souvenirs and anything shiny to captivate the boy’s attention. He taught Kai to read certain words, showing him carefully-bound books wrapped to protect against the snow.
"The snow was falling particularly slowly that day, making a dance of a thick flurry that swam to and fro until it landed upon ceruleum-heated ground, where it would slip steadily out of existence. The sky was one big blanket, endless and fluffy-looking.Two young boys huddled for warmth under one ill-fitting coat, sharing the body heat that the harsh Garlean air selfishly tried to steal away from them. The larger of the two barely fit in the coat at all, his shoulders and head poking out as thick fingers barely pinched the corner of the fur-lining in a feeble effort to keep it clutched tight to his round frame. The two sat hunched over a book, their bodies shielding fragile pages from the onslaught of snow.It was cold a cold, unforgiving day. But it was Garlemald and Garlemald was home. One of the boys had his hand on the page, drifting a soft fingerpad against the clean page, leaving no trace of dirt or grime upon the page. His hair was so clean and brilliantly colored that the snow blended into the white strands when it landed upon his head. His eyes, soft, rounded and gentle at the edges, would look up upon the other at his side."P-E-A-C-H. Peach. It's that special, pink fruit with the fuzzy skin. Remember, Kai? It's your favorite, after all."
He never wanted his newfound friend to leave, never wanted to be the one waiting at the edge of the schoolyard for his friend to show, only to be left hanging.Kai’s fears nearly came true once, when the boy with snow-white hair never showed for the better half of a full week. He could only assume the worst -- that the boy had moved, been killed, been enlisted in the military at a young age or even that he was avoiding Kai. It was only when he returned, apologizing and citing a minor flu being the reason for his absence, that Kai realized just how little he knew of the boy’s life. He decided to let the boy into his own for a change. Two separate lives became one as Kai broke one of the fundamental rules of his life. He invited the boy into the rat’s nest, to show his pristine new friend off to his family, his brothers, to Sir. In all of his kindness, the boy never judged them for an instant.Kai learned, that day, that the boy was an only child. One who always wanted somewhere to belong. Kai wanted so much more.Months passed. As Kai grew in his love, so too did he grow apart from the nest.
The boy came to him one night, pristine and perfect in every way as Garlean halfbreeds so often are. So long as he holds the pureblood in his veins, he still is granted status. More than the rats of the streets are granted. If the boy’s parents knew who their boy took company with, they would bring ruin to everything Sir built. They would kill his boys.Every time the halfbreed ate with them, broke bread and shared in their filth as if he really had any right to be one of them, every night he spent, Sir knew it was just one day closer to everything coming crumbling down. The boys in his care had been given the worst of life. They’d been stolen from their lives, their parents massacred in war, made orphans before they could even understand the meaning of the word. Some of it had been Sir’s fault, a long time ago.It turns out, it’s difficult to tell a halfbreed from a son of an annexed people. The Garlean military is always in need of more footsoldiers.
When he disappeared, Kai knew he hadn't gone home. He didn’t understand it, not really. But there was a cold feeling in his gut and an ever-building feeling of sickening clarity that began to build in his gut with every passing day. He still waited just beyond the schoolyard for weeks. The snowy-haired boy never showed. But unlike before, Kai could feel it wasn’t his fault.Kai knew Sir was the one who had done it. He couldn’t explain, but there was something telling about the glint to the man’s eye. There was something telling in the shade. There was something even more telling about the way the man could afford to buy them nice things all of a sudden, bearing gifts of paper-wrapped parcels in his arms. For Kai, he bought books and a heavy, fur-lined coat. Kai would have nightmares of his screaming, where he begged for help that would never come. Sometimes, Kai swore he heard the cries under the floorboards, in the walls, in another room-- but when he looked, he couldn’t ever see anything. It might have been his imagination. Maybe it was all just one, big, waking nightmare. It was during a soft night when it collapsed. Moonlight through the windows, cutlery colliding gently with mismatched porcelain in a near-silent match of supper, where each boy hadn’t yet the courage to broach the eldest elephant in the room. It was Sir who spoke first, and it was Kai that struck him. He’d never felt the texture of a man’s throat before. Kai had always been the biggest son, yet the greatest coward of the nest. He’d never struck a man. At that moment, all Kai had seen was white. It only came to him later, the gruesome details of the way he’d thrown himself onto a man he considered to be his father. When he dug his thumbs into his father’s larynx, the skin was softer than he expected. White, hot rage. The man’s throat gave under his fingertips, thin and elastic against the column of his vibrating throat, warbling with the effort of breath. He felt the old man’s fingers scrabbling at his skin, crescent nails of his one remaining fleshy arm digging craters into the boy’s skin-- when had he gotten so large? How long had it been since he’d grown? Had Sir always seen him as just a boy, had he ever fought back?Kai had been screaming something. For the longest time, he hadn’t remembered most of that night. It passed as a blur in the hollow vision of his blank mind, shielding him from the harsh truth that he’d always been too scared to face the reality of. Sir was never a prophet, a saint, a father. He was a drunk. He was a liar. More importantly, he was a coward. He always would be.The other boys had to pry him off of their father. They threw him out that night. Dodger, they’d say, our dodger, calm down and come back in the morning. Everything will be better then.Just.
Calm.
Down.Kai had no plans to come back, not then, not ever. That night, something broke in him. The ever-crafty Dodger, the thief in their midst and the visions of a boy he loved that would never, ever come home to a family that loved him. Kai’s heart yearned for answers, for a relief from the hollow ache and the ever-cavernous pain from feeling betrayed. But as always, the worst of fate always found its way to the weary. Kai had always been the best thief of the nest, but he was just a boy. He wasn’t perfect. He never would be. When Kai found his way from the outskirts to a city he’d never been permitted to scour, he was desperate. Kai was hungry, he felt the biting pangs of it on every breath. He was sick of drinking foul water from dirty puddles that he shared with the vermin. He was tired of the ghosts at the end of his vision, asking him to repay his debts. It was only an inevitability he would be caught. But the ever-godless boy had a plea deal. One he knew he could take for the lives of the weary, one to save his own above all else, just as he’d been taught.Kai broke the last rule and sold the nest’s location in exchange for his own life.

and thus, he ceased to feel.
In all the years that Kai has been free of Garlemald, he couldn’t explain a day of his escape in proper detail. It was a task thought to be impossible, especially for a boy who hadn’t yet seen his second decade of life. But Kai was a crafty bastard, and fate had granted him a rare opportunity afforded to very few. When the boy became a man, it was on the eve that he stepped foot onto Gyr Albanian soil for the first time. He took in the rolling hills. The glittering sand and the sun on his bare skin. The way the chill swept over the desert plains with the blanket caress of night. It could have been a home to him, once. He thinks he could make it home again, in another life. But not this one.. . .To the modern day, Kai still can’t wear a collar or tight shirts around his neck. He can’t face authority in the eye without a sneer. He can’t stay in one place too long, fearful of the next man that may think of him as a threat and stab him in the back. Kai grew into a large man. A hulking wall and the proverbial elephant in the room -- but even so, to this day, Kai still can’t look himself in the eye without feeling sick.

Filled with a passionate fire that died long ago and hasn't yet been rekindled.Kai is a man that doesn't particularly stand out in the crowd, while at the same time makes a conscious path for himself outside of it. With his height and bulk, unusual for his race, it's difficult for the miqo'te to blend in, yet he gives it his best effort with slouched shoulders and a downtrodden gaze to hide his visage from the perceiving eye. His movements are reminiscent of the coeurl that it's said his bloodline takes after, with slow, predator-like movements and a calculated gaze. He moves cautiously and with purpose, steps light and quiet while carrying with them the promise to lunge at a moments notice. His tail and ears similarly show a unique pattern, with dark fur and splotchy spots of darker swirls that seem to shift into a deep brown under the scrutiny of sunlight.POSITIVE TRAITS empathetic, adaptable, organizedNEUTRAL TRAITS unambitious, defeatist, honestNEGATIVE TRAITS temperamental, envious, rudeALIGNMENT Neutral EvilMBTI INTJENNEAGRAM Type 6 Wing 5NEURODIVERGENCES & DISORDERS

Due to his upbringing and the fragility of his day-to-day living, Kai has the instinctual urge to steal whatever he can get his hands on. Most of the time he doesn't even realize he's doing it. He just winds up with heavier pockets more often than not.
- Paranoia
Created from the instability of his life, Kai has troubles trusting anyone. He believes that everyone around him has a motive and their own lives to lead that counteract his own, and therefore has troubles growing close to anyone out of fear that they'll later betray him.- High-Functioning Autism

UNLIMITED/UNIVERSAL HOOKS
These hooks can be used multiple times and I encourage you to add onto them.
I. Runaway Thief
Kai is a thief through and through. He's been accustomed to it since youth. Whether your character is an upholder of law that has come across his (numerous) jail records & fines, a merchant that's been on the receiving end of his sticky fingers, or even a band of like-minded thieves, Kai is as reputable as he is sly. He's very difficult to catch, and he's even more difficult to work with. However, even a thief is in need of allies... or rivals. Kai will often seek out comrades for greater scores and cold nights.II. Urban Explorer
One of Kai's favorite hobbies is exploring abandoned or otherwise uncharted buildings. He could care less for fame or actually discovering new landmarks, but rather, he enjoys spectating the history of old civilizations-- and finding a great place to hunker down. Kai is very determined about traversing said places safely and refuses to go anywhere with monsters or beasts greater than he can handle. He'll leave that to the adventurers. He's known to escort curious scholars or fellow explorers around, with a determined will to keep them safe.III. Scrapper
As is his occupation, Kai can often be seen tearing apart old magitek or unused pieces of shelter to get to their metal and other precious, sellable goods. If your character is looking for someone to buy a bulk amount of crafting supplies from at a suspiciously cheap price, they may have met Kai.
LIMITED/PRIVATE HOOKS
These hooks are specific to Kai's ongoing story. encouraged but ask ooc first.
I. Lost Love
Kai is constantly pining for his other half, separated from him when they were children. He carries with him the guilt and heartbreak of separating far too soon for someone he loved -- while dealing with the consequences of betraying their family. Believing him to be dead, Kai wishes to meet his best friend once more.
(ask for more info)II. Den of Thieves
Kai betrayed his family by selling them out as a child to the Garlean Empire. He has no idea if they've survived or not, but if there were any survivors of the nest, they may not be happy with him for his selfish actions.III. A Father's Blood, Kin to Follow
Kai takes after his adoptive father, as much as he wishes he wouldn't. He has a tendency to show a bleeding heart, and may end up collecting struggling orphans in order to show them his way of life. He might even end up building a nest of thieves of his own to look after.

V'ixin is the antithesis to Kai's whole being, the light of his life and his closest ally. To this day, he trusts nobody else as much as he does Vi'xin-- yet still acknowledges he has very little faith in their bond. So long as he remains alive, he'll be nothing but a stain on Vi'xin's life. He can't bring himself to leave, so he relies on Vi'xin to do it for him. Neither of them are brave enough to pull that trigger.
